TimesLive reports that as higher education Minister Blade Nzimande once again outlined why free higher education for all was not a possibility, the EFF proposed a retirement fund levy to fund the country's fees shortfall.
EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) deputy leader Floyd Shivambu said a small levy should be charged on retirement funds which, according to his calculations, would create about R100bn in funding. In Shivambu’s view, this amount, coupled with the government's estimated R33bn in funding through the department and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, as well as increased corporate taxes, could create about R163bn in income to fund university education.
