IOL News reports that Cosatu has threatened to go ahead with its planned national strike for free education if talks between business and the government do not reap the desired results.
Last month the federation lodged a ‘Section 77’ notice at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) indicating its intention to strike and calling for talks between stakeholders, including the department of higher education, student bodies and church representatives. Cosatu’s threat of a strike follows weeks of widespread student protests for free education across the country’s tertiary institutions. The first meeting of stakeholders took place last month at Nedlac, and the second round of talks is scheduled to take place next week. Although Nedlac said the first round of talks were productive, Cosatu disagreed and accused business and the government of not taking the matter seriously.
