TimesLive writes that the proposed national minimum wage (NMW) of R3,500 a month is not a living wage, but is a step in the right direction in addressing wage inequality. That was according to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who announced the proposal on Sunday.
It was presented to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) by a panel appointed to advise on the level at which the NMW should be set. Ramaphosa said labour, the government and business would have to ask their constituencies to decide whether the proposal was acceptable. If there was agreement, the wage would be enshrined in law.
