TMG Digital reports that four police officers‚ one of them a major-general‚ are facing murder charges while several other officers are facing charges of attempted murder for their roles in the 2012 Marikana massacre.
Details of the charges were disclosed on Sunday in an update provided by President Jacob Zuma on steps being taken by departments to implement recommendations made by the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the tragedy. Zuma said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) had recommended prosecutions of certain SAPS members for the offences of murder‚ attempted murder‚ defeating and/or obstructing the ends of justice‚ contraventions of various sections of the IPID Act and contravention of the Commissions Act by giving false testimony. On 16 August 2012, 34 people, mostly mineworkers, were shot dead by police. In the preceding week, another 10 people were killed, including two police officers and two Lonmin security guards. The Farlam commission’s report and recommendations were released to the public in June 2015.
