Mail & Guardian reports that the Western Cape High Court has ruled in favour of the Democratic Alliance (DA), calling the appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as the SABC’s group executive of corporate affairs unlawful and irrational.
Judge Owen Rogers said in his judgment that the SABC disciplinary hearing which cleared Motsoeneng of all charges – which included a lie that Motsoeneng had completed matric – was “wholly inadequate”. He said that the initial disciplinary process should be put aside and a new hearing should be established and open to the public in line with the public protector’s report on the SABC. The judge also said that the new hearing should be chaired by an independent person who should be appointed by the court within two months.
