medicaldoctorHeraldLive reports that a new policy designed to prevent state doctors from abusing the Department of Health’s overtime system has been put on hold.

Eastern Cape health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said one of the reasons behind the proposed policy, which was meant to have come into operation at the beginning of January, was to curb the abuse of the existing system.  It would though have significantly reduced the overtime payments received by specialists working in the public sector.  The SA Medical Association (Sama) and the national Department of Health agreed to halt the policy’s implementation so it could be discussed further at national level.
