Fin24 reports that Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Workers (Amcu), fears for the safety of over 1,000 mineworkers who have staged an underground sit-in at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine.
Around 1,600 employees remain underground in an illegal sit-in, Charmane Russell, speaking on behalf of the mine, said late on Thursday. Without going into detail, Russell said that a "number of demands have been relayed to management". Although the sit-in is not driven by Amcu, Mathunjwa said the union had been called in to intervene in the matter. Trade union Solidarity also sent a representative to the mine and Coenie Rheeder said it appeared that the sit-in comprised a mix of employees belonging to various unions.
