unisaEWN reports that the University of SA (Unisa) and the National Health Education & Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) were due to resume talks on Friday morning after a protest at all its campuses over salary increases.

Union members brought the university’s registration process to a standstill on Thursday.  A meeting between the parties was held on Thursday at the request of management at the main campus in Pretoria.  The university is offering workers a 4.5% pay rise, while workers are apparently demanding 104% (a report in The Citizen indicates 14%).  Unisa’s Professor Somadoda Fikeni said:  “We are exploring every possibility despite the many challenges that all universities are facing which are unprecedented in many ways.  There is uncertainty about fee increases and therefore that revenue stream is uncertain.”  Meantime Unisa has extended the registration period at all its campuses.  Registrations were due to close on Friday.
