ANA reports that Business Unity SA (Busa) on Friday welcomed the endorsement of the national minimum wage (NMW) by labour federation Cosatu, saying that this marked the final endorsement of a labour relations stability.
“We are pleased with Cosatu’s endorsement of the agreement. The agreement heralds a new era for labour relations in South Africa. With the backing of all social partners in Nedlac, this agreement moves our labour market in the right direction,” Busa CE Tanya Cohen said. This came after Cosatu’s Central Executive Committee announced on Thursday that its affiliated unions had accepted the proposed NMW of R20 an hour or R3,500 a month, and that the federation was ready to sign on the dotted line. The NMW is expected to come into effect by at least 1 May 2018. Cohen said it was an important step in the right direction towards a living wage, and sent a message that all the social partners, including business, were committed to creating a fair, inclusive and progressive economy.
