News24 reports that the Moerane Commission heard on Thursday that competition for councillor positions in the African National Congress (ANC) was one of the reasons for political killings in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).  

Since 2011, there had been over 80 politically-related killings in the province.  The victims included party members, councillors and councillor candidates, KZN violence monitor Mary de Haas told the commission.  Evidence leader Advocate Bheki Manyathi called her to "set the scene" for the hearings.  Premier Willies Mchunu established the commission, chaired by advocate Marumo Moerane, to investigate political killings in the province from 2011 to the present.  The hearings continue.
