ANA reports that the Chamber of Mines (COM) said on Tuesday that a group of its office bearers met a delegation from the ANC, at the Chamber’s request, to discuss the amended 2017 Mining Charter.
Last week, the COM vehemently rejected the third iteration of the charter as gazetted by Minerals Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane, saying that the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) had not conducted meaningful prior consultation. The industry association indicated its intention of approaching the courts to stop implementation of the new charter. The COM’s office bearers conveyed to the ANC delegation their perspectives on the challenges that the new charter presented, in terms of both the flawed process and content. They also advised on the pending court actions. The point was apparently made that legal action against government of this sort was seen only as a matter of last resort and was brought only once all other avenues had failed. The ANC has reportedly asked to meet Zwane in order for him to explain and clarify some of the Charter’s concerns.
