santacoBloomberg reports that minibus taxi operators on Thursday suspended plans to strike on 12 July, pending the outcome of talks with Transport Minister Mkhacani Maswanganyi.

The SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) wants licenses to be made indefinite, which will enable operators to obtain finance for their vehicles from banks at more favorable rates.  Santaco spokesperson Thabiso Molelekwa indicated that the council would be meeting Mswanganyi on Friday.  Last month, taxi operators blocked many of the main roads and highways in Gauteng province, bringing transport to a near standstill in parts of Johannesburg.
