The New Age reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Tuesday said that Zingisa Mzendana, a miner who was killed in Marikana, was not its member, as had been claimed in the media.  

Mzendana was gunned down by an unknown man a day after the fifth commemoration of the Marikana Massacre.  It was alleged that he was a NUM leader who had been expelled from the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) because he had uncovered corruption by illegally gaining access to a colleague’s emails at platinum producer Lonmin.  Former NUM Rustenburg regional secretary Desmond Mfuloane indicated that Mzendana was actually suspended by Lonmin as he had contravened the company’s information technology policy by illegally gaining access to a colleague’s emails.  “That is when Mzendana came to the NUM offices for assistance with regard to his suspension.  It was on that basis in which he then apparently joined NUM, however, he never completed the membership application.”
