EWN reported on Saturday morning that five miners remained trapped underground after a seismic event at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu Mine near Carletonville on the West Rand.
Rescue officials spent most of Friday trying to locate the workers and managed to make contact with only one of them. The gold producer said the rescue operation would continue until they were found and brought to the surface. The five miners have their safety packs with them. A spokesperson said the Department of Mineral Resources was at the scene and normal operations at the mine have been halted.
