News24 reports that trade union federation Cosatu warned on Friday that the Msunduzi municipality was on the verge of collapse and acting municipal manager Sizwe Hadebe was the central figure in its disintegration.
Cosatu treasurer in Pietermaritzburg Themba Magwaza said the federation was outraged by the persistent provocation of workers and citizens by the municipality. He cited a number of instances including the late payment of workers and the interruption in the supply of services. Msunduzi municipality was previously put under administration in 2010 when it became cash-strapped and unable to pay employees and Cosatu claims the situation has gotten worse, especially this year. Cosatu said some of the problems at the municipality which were a sign of deteriorating governance included the collapse of collective bargaining; mass dismissals of more than a thousand workers; and continued labour unrest.
