Pretoria News reports that the Gauteng provincial secretary of the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu), Gift Ndwandwe, has vowed to appeal against his imminent deportation by the Home Affairs Department.
He was arrested last week for allegedly obtaining his South African identity document fraudulently and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Ndwandwe’s court appearance came after an investigation by Home Affairs into the legality of his citizenship revealed that he was a Zimbabwean national. He was released on Friday afternoon by the court as his lawyer indicated that he would be lodging an appeal in the High Court against his deportation.” The latest development came after much speculation about Ndwandwe’s whereabouts last week after he failed to report to work. Meantime, the union’s provincial office in Braamfontein received a letter from Home Affairs instructing payroll officials to terminate Ndwandwe’s contract with immediate effect.
