metrorail thumb medium90 92Daily Voice reports that Metrorail security guards in the Western Cape nabbed two would-be arsonists on Thursday when they allegedly tried to set carriage seats alight.

The male suspects were in a train en route to Cape Town and were caught trying to set fire to seats when the train was between Salt River and Woodstock stations.  Neither of the men had a valid train ticket either, said Metrorail’s Regional Manager, Richard Walker.  The suspects were handed over by security to the Cape Town Rapid Response Rail Unit and have been detained at Woodstock SAPS.  Charges of malicious damage to property have been opened.  The latest arrests follow shortly upon the arrest of a 26-year-old Bonteheuwel man on 13 October in Salt River for vandalising a coach.  Walker urged members of the public to come forward with knowledge of criminals who were crippling the railway service.
