IOL News reports that South African Airways (SAA) has confirmed that its managers will not receive salary increases this year due to the financial constraints currently facing the embattled airliner.  

But an irate employee has questioned why, if SAA was facing constraints, lower-level workers are set to get a 6% increase while managers are not.  Responding to this, SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali confirmed the decision to not grant middle management increases this year.  He indicated:  "Managers were advised in writing that no salary increases would be paid to them this year due to the financial constraints of the company.  "Labour was also advised of this position earlier in the year.  Based on negotiations with recognised unions, an agreement was eventually reached on a 6% salary increase (for lower level employees)."  Tlali explained that managers were the only ones affected by the salary freeze as the national carrier wanted them to "lead by example and demonstrate the severity of the financial constraints on the company".  Executives meanwhile, agreed to reduce their salaries by 5% from October 2017.
