EWN reports that the Revelation Church of God maintains its congregants were provoked by a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer who was clamping cars parked on the road.
Officers came under attack on Sunday after towing an illegally parked car belonging to a member of the Hill brow church, with one cop disarmed, assaulted and left unconscious. A video on social media shows the officer drawing his firearm and firing warning shots into the air to stop the congregants from advancing towards him, but the crowd proceeded to attack him. But a church spokesperson said the metro police were removing cars that were parked legally and that this had enraged the churchgoers. The metro cop who was assaulted is still recovering in hospital.
