ANA reports that a 44-year-old alleged illegal miner was killed in rock fall in Driekop outside Burgersfort on Wednesday.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said Diphasong Commence Lerutla was mining chrome illegally when the incident occurred. “The police were informed of the accident and visited the scene. The EMS [emergency medical service] were also called and on arrival the deceased was certified dead,” he indicated. He called on all members of the community “to halt this tendency of engaging in illegal mining as this has, in addition of them becoming in conflict with the laws governing the mineral resources, a potential of claiming lives due to the hazards associated with unprotected digging of the ground.” He also said that since the activities of illegal mining started mushrooming along the R37 road between Lebowakgomo and Burgersfort, scores of people have already been arrested and huge trucks as well as mining machinery confiscated.
