EWN reports that the National Education Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) has warned that its looming strike at National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will likely to cripple the student financial aid scheme.
While no date has been announced for the strike, the union plans to withdraw its labour force because salary review negotiations with the employer failed last year. Union spokesperson Khaya Xaba commented: “We’re a majority union at NSFAS, representing more than 85% of the workforce, so if we down tools, the whole system will shut down.” He also said that the union’s demands (which include a review of the salary structure for levels 1 to 12; medical aid subsidy improvements; full-time employment of workers who are currently on fixed term contracts; and a review of the organisational rights agreement) have not changed. NSFAS said it was aware of the planned strike and was still in talks with the union.
