Timeslive and eNCA report that as the national bus strike enters its second week, bus commuters will have to continue making alternative transport arrangements.
SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) spokesperson Zanele Sabela told eNCA on Monday that the strike was continuing‚ despite calls by the ministers of transport and labour for unions and employers to find a resolution. “The ministers have urged us to come up with a resolution but the employers have given us an ultimatum to accept the offer on the table. The problem with the offer is that it is only for 11 months. The employers are robbing workers of one month’s salary increase,” Sabela said. The employers have apparently given the five unions until Wednesday to accept their revised offer or they will revert to the original one. They are said to be offering a 9% salary increase for the first year of a two-year deal, and 8% for the second year. Workers are demanding a 9.5% wage hike and also want a night shift allowance. Sabela indicated that on Monday unions would discuss a way forward.
