durbanDaily News reports that angry Expanded Public Works Programme (EPW) workers stormed the Durban City Hall offices on Monday, demanding to talk to city treasurer Krish Kumar.

Metro police officers went to the scene as discussions between Kumar and the workers’ representatives took place.  Kumar related that he had been in a normal operations meeting when a group of people stormed in.  He said the group was unhappy that they were not paid on 25 October last week.  Kumar explained further:  “When payments came through last week, unfortunately, the department submitted incorrect rates and those payments were rejected by the treasury.”  He said at the meeting it was agreed that some of the staff would be paid on Monday, while challenges for other staff would be resolved as soon as possible.  Earlier this month, EPWP staff had gone on a protest demanding that they be made permanent.  This resulted in refuse not being collected for days and it being strewn across the city's streets during the protest.
