EWN reports that workers at the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp say they will intensify their strike if management goes ahead and implements the ‘no work, no pay’ principle.
After hours of discussions between unions and hospital management, there was a breakthrough with management conceding to most of the workers’ demands, except for scrapping the no work, no pay rule. Nurses and admin staff stopped working on Friday, demanding better working conditions and the removal of management over allegations of nepotism. Workers said night shift staff were ready to return to their posts on Tuesday night, but that was only if the employer was willing to pay them for the work they had not performed since the strike began. Patrick Kehumile of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) said if management made deductions from salaries, they would intensify the strike and shut down the hospital. According to workers, management has agreed to fix the canteen and improve working conditions, including hiring more staff.
