eskomBL Premium writes that Eskom’s new CEO André de Ruyter has nailed his colours to the mast of improving the power utility’s operational performance in the short term and expects to present a plan to its board by the end of January.

The plan will lay out his steps to restore the "integrity of its operational assets".  "Eskom can be fixed.  The narrative that Eskom is damaged beyond repair is not true.  But, we are in a deep crisis, there is no doubt about that," said De Ruyter, who started work officially on 6 January, in an interview.  Eskom is buckling under a R450bn debt mountain and struggling to keep the country’s lights on.  The former CEO of packaging firm Nampak said his job was as much about execution as any other consideration, especially when it came to maintenance.  The plan he expects to present to the board is at an advanced stage, and will focus on the maintenance of Eskom’s ageing power stations.  "In particular, our generation assets have suffered from poor maintenance.  We have spent a lot of money on maintenance, but the outcomes have been particularly poor.  The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that we have used contractors that are not always properly qualified to do the work they have been put on site for," De Ruyter said.
