BusinessLive reports that according to the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu), employees of state-owned bus company Autopax will get the rest of their salaries on Wednesday.  

The cash-strapped company, which operates City to City and Translux buses, announced at the weekend that it would pay its 1,071 employees only 50% of their January salaries due to financial challenges.  Autopax is a subsidiary of the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa).  The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) said it met with Autopax managers on Monday to deal with the matter.  “The management confirmed that the balance of the salaries would be paid today and tomorrow (Wednesday),” Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said.  This was also confirmed by SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) spokesperson Zanele Sabela, who said after a meeting with all the unions on Monday, the employer assured them the remainder of staff salaries would be paid by Wednesday.  Numsa said it remained concerned about the state of Autopax and, by extension, parent company Prasa.  Satawu spokesperson Zanele Sabela said that the union was encouraged by the latest development, but said they it wanted a meeting with Autopax’s management to talk about the company’s turnaround strategy.
