Engineering News reports that Impala Platinum Rustenburg CE Mark Munroe was granted bail of R60,000 after appearing in court on Friday.
This followed Impala Platinum being charged with alleged contraventions of Covid-19 regulations issued in terms of the Disaster Management Act of 2002. Munroe appeared in the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court in a representative capacity on behalf of Impala Platinum. The matter was postponed for further investigation. The mine reportedly issued a notice to employees to return to work during the national lockdown, saying it had been granted a departmental exemption to do so. Six thousand employees, representing about 20% of total employee levels, were reportedly recalled to work on Sunday, 12 April, but many were turned back at police roadblocks. Mineral Resources and Energy parliamentary portfolio committee chairperson Sahlulele Luzipo has since called on the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to investigate possible permit abuse.
