education blackboard thumb medium80 92News24 reports that as SA wrestles with the Covid-19 pandemic, more clarity on when schools will be reopened may be available in two weeks.

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga indicated that she could only say for sure when schools would reopen when her plan had been approved by the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and the Cabinet.  She told MPs on Tuesday that her department would present the detailed plan for the reopening of schools on 18 May.  Last Wednesday at a presentation to MPs, the department outlined an initial plan for schools to reopen in phases from 6 May, with Grade 12s and Grade 7s returning to schools.  The plan was then presented to the social cluster of ministers, who said 6 May was not achievable.  Then last Thursday, Motshekga announced at a press briefing that schools could open on 1 June for Grade 12s and Grade 7s.  It is that plan that will be presented to the NCCC and then to the Cabinet for approval, which will be dependent on the department's arrangements to ensure that schools were safe and Covid-19 compliant.
