joburgcityThe Star reports on a violent situation that ensued at the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) on Tuesday when a confrontation between employees of the municipality-owned entity and the board of directors got out of hand.  

Metro police apparently had to be called stabilise the situation.  The JPC manages the City of Johannesburg’s property assets.  The dispute, which halted all operations on Tuesday, started when the board, chaired by attorney Caswell Rempheri, attempted to introduce new additions to management.  There were angry reactions, which halted the board meeting.  The situation got so tense that the board called for police assistance and at about 1pm, a group of men dressed in black arrived to “assist the board” control the situation.  “Things are very bad there, they removed the CEO and now want to bring their own people.  The board is under investigation but they want to make new appointments.  That’s why there is a fight,” a source said.  The board is being investigated for maladministration and abuse of power and has been accused of interfering in operational duties.  There have been reports of circulation a “hit list” on the JPC WhatsApp groups which threatens the lives of the company’s top brass.  Police said they were investigating the “hit list”.  Police have also confirmed that a case of kidnapping, theft and assault was opened last week after a JPC employee was abducted and beaten over two days.  Meantime, President Cyril Ramaphosa has told Gauteng Premier David Makhura to “sort out” the JPC after a litany of bad reports.
