gautengThe Star reports that the future of three suspended officials in the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts and Culture hangs in the balance as Covid-19 restrictions have hindered disciplinary proceedings.

The three officials who were suspended for irregular expenditure are chief financial officer Priya Lutchman, director for supply chain management Koketso Lekalakala, and acting director for facilities John Mofokeng.  They are also implicated in tender and appointments irregularities amounting to R43-million as well as performance management development systems payments.  According to an insider, they were due for a hearing at the beginning of September, but because of Covid-19 restrictions, “there have been some delays due to transitioning to online”.  Moreover, it is presently not clear if the matter has been handed over to the premier’s office or not.  Premier David Makhura’s spokesperson denied reports linking the matter to his office.  In March, MEC Mbali Hlophe told the provincial legislature that the investigations into the suspended officials had been completed.  The Democratic Alliance (DA) now intends to table questions in the legislature “to ascertain what next steps will be taken following the disciplinary hearings against these three senior officials.”
