SowetanLive reports that a Mpumalanga principal who had been chased away from her school by unruly members of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) will be returning to her position five months later.
Nondlhelehle Buta, a principal at Bawokuhle Primary School in Gemsbokspruit near Kwamhlanga, will be one of two school headmasters to return to school after they were prevented from attending by Sadtu members. Patrick Sehoole also returned to his post at the Wolvenkop Special School last month after being ousted in October last year. It was reported in September how Sadtu members in the Nkangala district were accused of using violence, threats and intimidation against principals. The situation was so bad that two principals suffered depression and had to be admitted in hospital for psychiatric evaluation after they were threatened and told not to return to their schools. In Buta's case, a local councillor was also involved. Buta went to court in August to compel the Mpumalanga education department to protect her from threats by Sadtu members. She was targeted after taking action against two teachers, who were Sadtu members and who apparently refused to sign attendance registers. Buta reported this to the circuit office, which led to their salaries not being paid.
