education blackboard thumb medium80 92SowetanLive reports that teacher unions have taken aim at district officials of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), blaming them for the matric exam paper leaks.

National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of SA (Naptosa) executive director Basil Manuel said the people responsible for the leaks were those who were managing the examinations.  He said:  “These papers were duplicated a long time ago and were packaged and placed at district offices.  They are only released to the school principals on the morning of the paper.  People behind these leaks are those in charge of seeing [to] the integrity of the exam.  The perpetrators should be brought to book because as a country we start looking bad, as if we can’t even write exams without corruption being involved.”  SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said:  “The teachers and learners have worked very hard under difficult circumstances and undermining their efforts must be condemned and a sense of urgency on the side of the law enforcement agencies is required.”  Professional Educators’ Union general secretary Ben Machipi stated that the leaking of exam papers would impact negatively on the integrity of the exams and was a serious indictment on security systems in the exam section.  On Monday, the DBE announced that it was investigating the reported leak of the physical science paper 2, which came days after it had requested the Hawks to investigate the leak of the mathematics paper 2.  DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the investigations were at an advanced stage.
