EWN reports that lawyers for the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers’ Union (Bemawu) on Friday said the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) must immediately stop its planned retrenchments and allow for proper consultation.
Bemawu had brought an urgent application to the Labour Court in Braamfontein in an attempt to stop a restructuring process involving the retrenchment of about 400 of the SABC’s employees. Earlier in November, the public broadcaster issued notices of retrenchment to employees, but has since put the process on hold until the end of the year. The Labour Court heard that the SABC was acting in bad faith and had not allowed for meaningful consultation between unions and management. Bemawu’s lawyer Omphemetse Mooki said it was not good enough that the broadcaster had suspended the retrenchment process as it could not be trusted. Nazeer Cassim, representing the SABC, said the court should disregard the Bemawu’s argument and that his client was being kind by suspending the retrenchment the process. “Unfortunately, in this country, kindness is interpreted to be a weakness,” he opined.
