amcu thumb medium80 81Mining Weekly reports that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has expressed its “dismay” following the death of a mineworker and the injury of another, reportedly at Harmony Gold's Bambanani shaft, in the Free State, on 13 January.

This, Amcu indicated, was on the back of a fatality at Sibanye-Stillwater's Kloof mine on 8 January.  “We await further details in this regard,” Amcu stated, adding that 2021 “has not begun well”.  The union reported that an investigation was under way to determine how and why the incident at Bambanani occurred, but indicated that a fall of ground was believed to have occurred, subsequently trapping two rock drill operators underground.  After the incident, both mineworkers were located and recovered, with one being declared dead at the scene while the survivor was rushed to the hospital.
