BL Premium reports that the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), which is at loggerheads with communications minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams over planned retrenchments, says it supports government plans to consider taking on some of its employees who are set to be laid-off in its cost-cutting drive.
In a letter to Ndabeni-Abrahams, SABC board chair Bongumusa Makhathini expressed his support for the minister’s suggestion that some employees could be absorbed by the department of communications or other government departments. Tensions have been simmering between SABC board members, some of whom have staked their reputation on putting the state-owned company on a solid financial footing, and Ndabeni-Abrahams, who has a history of a thwarting turnaround plans that could lead to politically sensitive retrenchments at the public broadcaster. Makhathini’s letter came after Ndabeni-Abrahams urged the board to consider further reducing job cuts or avoid them completely. An earlier intervention on her part resulted in the broadcaster reducing by half the number of jobs it had originally intended to cut. But, Ndabeni-Abrahams’ proposal, if accepted, is likely to put her on a collision course with the Treasury, which is trying to reduce the national budget shortfall with austerity measures that include slashing the public sector wage bill.
