boardroomtableSowetanLive reports that Eskom wage increase negotiations have been suspended for more than a week after unions demanded that the power utility's CEO Andre de Ruyter address them on the company's financial situation.

This came after secretaries of the three unions that are part of Eskom's bargaining forum, namely the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and Solidarity, met with board chairperson Prof Malekgapuru Makgoba on Thursday morning. They demanded to be addressed by De Ruyter on the company's turnaround strategy and financial position. The wage negotiations, which began on Tuesday, were suspended as the three unions awaited Makgoba's response to their request for Eskom boss to address them. However in a later letter, Makgoba informed the unions that the central bargaining forum would be suspended until 17 May. Eskom proposed changing conditions of service during the first day of wage talks. NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said: "The three unions want to make an input into the turnaround strategy and make a contribution on how they think Eskom could be ran."
