News24 reports that a former Nelson Mandela Bay municipality administration clerk has been sentenced to an effective seven years in jail for 244 counts of fraud.
Stephanie Reeners, 48, was sentenced in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Gqeberha on Tuesday. Reeners worked at the municipality's Central Information Centre (CIC) and volunteered as a CIC assistant. "Between November 2014 and June 2017, Reeners in her capacity as the central administration clerk at the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality accepted payments for new building plans. She pretended to the building inspectorate that tax invoices were received by the treasury division," said Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela. The Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in Gqeberha discovered fraudulent transactions involving more than R640,000. Reeners was arrested on 3 March 2020. She was sentenced to eight years in jail, of which one year was suspended for five years, making her effective sentence seven years in prison.
