News24 reports that according to the SA National Editors' Forum (Sanef), journalists will be prioritised for vaccination under the country's Covid-19 vaccine rollout programme.
The organisation said it was informed by the government on Monday that journalists would be next in line to receive their vaccines "as soon as all media houses submit their information regarding their employees' age groups and regions where they are stationed". The vaccinations will be open to community and freelance journalists as well, who will need to apply via the Government Communications and Information System (GCIS). Sanef welcomed the government's decision to "follow through on its promise to prioritise journalists in the country's vaccine rollout programme". The organisation went on to state: "Journalists, as designated frontline workers, have risked their lives every day for the past 16 months, working throughout the pandemic as part of their responsibility to the public. They have traversed the country, going to hospitals, clinics, vaccination sites, mass rallies, press conferences etc. to reflect on the pandemic, in service to the country to ensure that the public is adequately informed." Details about the programme will be forthcoming.
