News24 reports that more than 23,000 police staff have been vaccinated against Covid-19 infection since last week's start of the security cluster rollout.

There has, however, been a delay due to the recent civil unrest, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). On Thursday, national police confirmed that interventions were in progress to ensure the officers deployed in KZN who were dealing with the unrest would be vaccinated urgently. To date, 23,375 police officers and personnel, which includes cleaners and security staff, have been vaccinated with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine across the eight provinces. "The service continues to prioritise members, who are at high risk of exposure to the virus, ensuring that they are first in line to be vaccinated. Those who are 60 years and above, as well as those with comorbidities, are also receiving preference," said police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe. Since the start of the pandemic, 698 police members have died of Covid-19, while 34,021 have been infected. Lieutenant-General Franscinah Vuma, chairperson of the SAPS national Covid-19 steering committee, said they were satisfied with the pace at which their nationwide vaccination drive was progressing.
