News24 reports that Table View police officer Sergeant Nametso Molema was honoured at a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service on Thursday after being shot in the head while attempting to stop a business robbery.
Molema and colleague Sergeant Malibongwe Mnani responded to a call for help at a factory in Killarney Gardens on payday last Friday. After initially holding staff at gunpoint, the robbers ran out, shooting. Molema was shot in the head and died soon afterwards. Mnani was shot in the leg and is recovering from his injury. A massive operation involving the police, aerial support and local armed response companies fanned out to catch the robbers. Two people were arrested during the operation last Friday, and another two in Bellville on Saturday. One person, who was shot, was released as he could not be linked to the robbery. He is suspected to have been hit in the chaos as people ran for cover during the crossfire. Baxolele Matolo and Luyanda Futile have appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court, charged with murder, attempted murder and armed robbery. Another suspect, Gcinikhaya Mbuluka, is still in hospital under police guard.
