SowetanLive reports that police are looking for a group of robbers who raided a Mpumalanga hospital and robbed patients and staff at random at the weekend.
The incident took place at Carolina Hospital on Saturday when two people – one with a gunshot wound, who eventually succumbed to his injuries, and the other with a stab wound – were brought to the hospital by a group of men. A police spokesperson indicated: “The staff managed to stabilise the one with a stab wound and the one with gunshot wound succumbed to his injuries. The men who brought the victims went on a rampage and robbed staff members and patients of their belongings, including cellphones.” No one was injured during the robbery, but some damage was caused to the hospital building. There have not yet been any arrests. Health MEC Sasekani Manzini visited the facility on the same day to meet with the leadership of the unions and the security cluster. "Since we met with the police and the security of the hospital, it has been agreed on having the members of the SAPS patrolling the hospital on an hourly basis, especially on weekends. [We will] provide counselling to the affected staff and patients, including the security officers who were on duty and enhance security measures by installing burglar doors on the doors of nurses duty rooms,” said Manzini.
