The Citizen reports that trade union Solidarity on Tuesday welcomed Telkom’s announcement that it would not continue with its retrenchment process.
Solidarity spokesperson Marius Croucamp said the announcement was a victory for workers, who have been seeking answers and more information from Telkom about its retrenchment plans. Last week, the Labour Court ordered that a dispute relating to information-sharing in respect of the proposed layoffs must be referred to the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) within five days. “We are still waiting for a date from the CCMA,” Croucamp said. He added that Solidarity was seeking legal advice over Telkom’s plan to offer voluntary retrenchment packages to non-unionised staff. Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko reportedly announced on Monday that the company would abandon a process that could possibly have led to forced retrenchments for over 4,000 staff and instead offer employees voluntary packages.
