Press Statement dated 28 August 2019

COSATU in Gauteng is angered and saddened by the loss of workers lives in the explosion at the Echo Energy Company in Germiston on Monday.

It is always the workers who become the victims of this explosion when they are supposed to be protected by their employer against such incidents. Many of these companies that operate in our country have little regard for workplace safety because they often ignore occupational health and safety prescripts.

It is because of such incidents that we have decided to intensify our campaign for workplace safety. We call on the Department of Labour and the employer to really protect the workers and do thorough inspections at these Companies.

We further call for workers to always be vigilant to their safety at the work place and report the non-compliance of these companies.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased workers and wish the injured a speedy recovery.
