Cape Argus reports that Metrorail commuters in Cape Town should expect delays of up to an hour on Monday after 10 carriages were destroyed in a blaze, at the weekend, in an alleged arson attack.
On Saturday, plumes of smoke poured out of Cape Town station when two trains went up in flames on platforms 11 and 12. Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker advised: “The two train-sets destroyed in the latest incident serve the northern service area and will lead to further overcrowding in this corridor.” He indicated that the delays were caused by trains having to wait in a holding pattern outside Cape Town station to be allocated arrival and departure slots. He also said the incident had left five platforms temporarily out of commission due to repairs and platform changes. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this this stage.
