Sowetan reports that former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi is pulling out all the stops to secure political support for a new trade union federation he is set to lead.
On Monday, Vavi and those working with him met to plan for a workers’ summit scheduled for 1 May to provide a final platform for interested parties to discuss the launch. They met with various trade unions, as well as opposition political parties. Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane confirmed he met Vavi and his group to discuss their plans for the new federation and a possible coalition with the United Front (UF), a movement formed by metalworkers’ union Numsa. But Maimane said the DA would not consider joining forces with other parties before the results of the upcoming local elections were out. The UF and 10 other new organisations have applied to contest the polls. Maimane commented that the new federation would reinvigorate the role of unions. Vavi is due to table final plans for the summit on Tuesday.
