SABC News reports that there is a glimmer of hope that more than 1,800 jobs could be saved at Exxaro Coal's Arnot colliery. Eskom will soon be announcing the appointment of at least two companies that will be supplying coal at the colliery linked-power station.
Workers' unions are hoping that newly appointed companies will absorb workers who are on the brink of losing their jobs. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has however lamented Eskom's delay in appointing new suppliers. Many workers are facing retrenchment after the company's contract to supply coal to Eskom expired in 2015. Eskom indicated that the utility would announce before June the nmaes of the companies that have won the bid to supply coal to the power station.
