SABC News reports that the SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) in the North West has called on the provincial government to take strong action against municipalities that continue to contravene labour laws.
Samwu provincial secretary Thebeitsile Mokoto stated that the action taken against the Ventersdorp Municipality following the recent court ruling against it for contravening labour laws was not punitive enough. The municipality was fined R10,000. Mokoto said: “The situation facing municipal workers in the entire province is indeed worrisome and I don’t believe the outcome of the court is enough and will redress the pains the families of thousands of our workers who have been affected by these conditions that are not conducive in the work place.”
