education90The Citizen reports that NGO Equal Education (EE) says that cases of graft in the “jobs-for-cash” scandal at schools must be investigated further and criminal charges or disciplinary hearings instituted.

It was responding to an education department report on the sale of teacher posts that found clear wrongdoing or suspicion thereof in 38 of 81 cases investigated.  The report also indicated that the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) was involved.  EE said:  “The victims of corruption in education are, first, the pupils who are forced to learn under wrongly appointed, sometimes unqualified teachers, principals and senior officials.  Second, the committed teachers whose career development is demoralisingly blocked unless they participate in the corrupt system, and last, the whistleblowers who draw attention to these corrupt practices.  This has dire consequences for teaching and learning.”
