NorthamBloomberg reports that a second person was killed near Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine in clashes between rival unions after an employee was gunned down near the operation on Sunday.

“We suspect that it is out of retaliation," police spokeswoman Ronel Otto said.  Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which represents most employees at the mine, and the rival Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) clashed on Monday on a road near the operation, which is about 20 kilometres from the town of Northam in Limpopo province.  The situation was now calm and there were no suspects in either killing, Otto said.  The man shot dead Sunday was a member of the NUM’s branch committee.  NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said the situation was very tense.  Northam has suspended operations at the mine.
