News24 reports that the Hawks are investigating the murders of two rival union members employed at Northam Platinum, the platinum producer said on Tuesday.
“The Hawks (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) will now handle the case. It is considered as a priority crime investigation. It shows you the seriousness of the case,” CEO Paul Dunne indicated. Calm had since returned to the mine, but underground operations were still suspended, he said. Mine management and police met National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) leaders on Monday evening to explore ways to end the dispute. The meeting was due to resume on Tuesday morning.
